For me, my job is satisfying in two very different ways.
The first way is just pure nerd joy. I love working in a lab. I love learning new techniques. I love using all the different machines. I love it when I get some raw numbers off of a reader and turn them into a really pretty graph. I also love graphs. The every day work is a joy for me.
The second thing that makes my job satisfying is that I know I am making a difference to the world. I am working towards finding cures for diseases that cause pain and suffering to millions of people. And I am doing the very best that I can to change that. And whilst I might not be the person that finds ‘The Cure'(tm), I know that every experiment I do is one more step along the way to it. Behind every big scientific discovery are ten thousand little experiments that helped us get there. I am happy to be part of the ten thousand little experiments.
Every little experiment that works out and gives meaningful results is really satisfying. To know that you have made a little discovery that no one ever found before is really cool!
As Lesley said, to know that each little discovery contributes to everyone’s knowledge, that eventually they can be used to make people’s lives better is very satisfying too!
Hi!
I love interacting with a variety of people so my job is perfect for that. I get to meet world famous scientists (some I work with, some when they come to visit or at conferences). I really like talking to students too. Their perspective on the world can be very different and is often refreshing. My students seem to have so much more going on in their lives than I did when I was at Uni.
Best wishes
Richard
The most satisfying part of my job is helping others (the students) learn something new (for example, a laboratory based technique like tissue culture).
