I have no real regrets about the course that I took at university. I have a real love for Biochemistry as a subject. However if I was selecting my course for study today, I would have a wider selection of courses and would probably go for something targeted towards drug discovery.

      Hey!

For A-levels I picked the subjects that I liked best, sometimes I wonder what I would have done if I didn’t pick them but I don’t regret them. There are hundreds of different degree courses you can get into with science A-levels.

For my degree I picked Biochemistry because I liked the subjects at A-level and because it would give me lots of choices of jobs afterwards. If you do, say, a degree in law then you’re almost certainly going to be a lawyer but with a general science degree you can do nearly anything! I know people who have gone on to be teachers, scientists, businesspeople, designers, bankers and many more. So even those who didn’t want to stay in science learned plenty of skills to get them careers doing other things.

At my university we didn’t get to pick different courses within the degree but if you know there are certain areas you want to study you may want to look out for which degrees offer them. Most will tell you exactly what options you have in their prospectus’.

As for me, I’m still working and studying in science so, I don’t regret my degree choice either!

      Thanks for your question!
      Laura

No, no regrets at all about courses. I think I have been very lucky in my choices and have benefitted from some great teachers along the way. I sometimes think about where I might be if I had chosen differently – for example, I was offered a Ph.D. studentship to study how heat stable enzymes used in washing detergents work – but I’m pretty happy doing what I’m doing now.
One thing I do regret about University is not really making the most of the other things that University offers – clubs, sports activities etc. Remember that University is not just training for your subject, it’s training for life. These days, employers are looking for people who are more than just swots!
      Best wishes

      Hey Froodlemoo,

I definitely don’t have any regrets in the courses I studied at University. But, if Biomedical Sciences didn’t exist, I would have definitely studied Human Physiology and Pharmacology for my Undergraduate degree.

      Best Wishes,

      Vedia

      Hello Froodlemoo,

I have no regrets about the courses I studied at university or college. The key thing is to pursue a subject area that you are interested in which is also ’employable’.

      Best wishes,
      Alex
